16Nov 12 Grey Sky thinking...

The start of November (01.1.12) saw the first “Grey sky thinking” company retreat take place at the Anderton centre, Chorley

It proved to be a fabulous day with differing kinds of weather; but a perfect opportunity to test out the range.

The Anderton Centre is situated on the shores of the beautiful Rivington Reservoir in the West Pennine Moors in Lancashire, close to Chorley, Bolton, Manchester and Preston. The centre boasts superb facilities and an idyllic rural setting which is conveniently located close to the M6 and M61 corridor.

The aim of the day was to discuss product direction and plans for our 40th anniversary fast approaching in 2014. Keep an eye out for the start of our exciting plans in the coming months.

However; the real story was long standing team member and Head of Design; Anne Carter creating a new kind of walking…

After seeking the advice of a local farmer and taking what can only be described as a shortcut through a swamp; Anne became embroiled in a battle with the elements. Woman against mud.

The results of which can be seen on the below link.

A fun day was had by all and most importantly gave the teams the chance to test and showcase our product range in high winds and rainy climates.

Big thanks to all the staff at http://www.andertoncentre.co.uk/

16Sep 12 Company retreat 2012

Friday (14.09.12) saw our annual OSC company retreat take place at Windy Harbour Farm in Glossop.

The OSC group which owns the Sprayway, Mountain Equipment, Ronhill and Hilly brands asked the moorland adventure group to again organise and instruct our annual away day.

It proved to be a competitive day of outdoor activities for all with a closely fought battle between teams made up of office and warehouse staff.

On a round robin basis, the teams set about an itinerary which included archery, giant jenga, a cycling obstacle course, assault course, fire making and scaling a 20ft climbing wall.

Some stand out performances from Sprayway staff saw Northern Sales Rep, Mike Booth complete the cycling task in a record time with no penalties.

However; drama ensued in the final challenge of the day. With each team having been tasked with the assignment of safely launching 4 raw eggs from the top of the 20ft high climbing wall using ONLY the contents of a bag of tools, one team whom will remain nameless took it upon themselves to construct a safety box made from rogue beer mats. With said box wrapped in a bin bag, the bag sailed high into the Derbyshire air and landed far away in bushes. The watching crowd all proclaimed at how well they had done. However a certain helpful Sprayway Marketing Manager volunteered himself to fetch the bag and upon finding the rogue contents, put his size 11 walking boot right through the 4 eggs to the amazement of the on looking crowd. Despite some protest from the cheating team, they were eventually disqualified and normal order was restored.

A fun day was had by all and most importantly gave the teams the chance to test and showcase our product range in high winds and rainy climates.

Bring on next year team Green!

30Mar 12 Dash Hoody - 5 Stars

The good folk over at Gear We Are have just finished a review of the Dash Hoody and posted the results on line. To say we're chuffed is an understatement!

The fabric and alternative fleece fabric were bigs hits in the review and it gained the following summary:

SUMMARY: Sprayway’s Dash Hoody is feminine, warm and stylish and doesn’t look as cheap as a bog-standard ‘Fleece’. Its pockets are cosy and it’s a joy to wear when walking and generally as casual wear. It’s a little pricey, but feels like a quality product.

You can find the full review in our Product Tips Section here, or on Gear We Are's own website.

28Mar 12 March Walk Idea's 2 - Dog Walks

Whilst, obviously, dog walks are perfect all year round Spring seems to ideal. Just because they stop being something you HAVE to do in the driving icy wind or rain, and actually become fun again!

Sometimes, so much so that it's Rover, who's dragging his paws following you out the door.

Our Walks Map is full of great dog walks, with the following being particularly great:

Portnoo & Naran Beach - Donegal

Portreath - Cornwall

Ashdown Forest - East Sussex

Church Stretton - Shropshire

Pitlochry - Perthsire

Bollington - Cheshire

So grab the lead, boots and a tennis ball and get out walking.

Oh - and don't forget the pooh bags!

27Mar 12 Trail Magazine Review Compass Shorts

Trail Magazine have been testing a number of walking shorts lately and the Sprayway Compass Short got a look in for Best in Test, just losing out to some much, much more expensive shorts.

The full review reads a bit like:

"The fabric used in the Sprayway Compass / Escape shorts is two-way stretch so they are great if you struggle with getting a good fit. There is also stretch in the waist so again these can expand around  a tubby tum or hug a neater waistline.

There is no belt provided but you get belt loops in case you want to add one. I also liked the brushed lining inside the waist that make these a little more comfy compared to most shorts here.

The lower right leg pocket will take a small guidebook and at a squeeze you can get an OS map in the zipped hip pockets too. There’s a simple Velcro closure pocket at the rear. These are great shorts due to that stretch fabric and its general comfort, and at this price they are a real bargain.

But the pockets of the Sprayway Compass / Escape could be a little better as those two hip pockets are a notch small if you want to stash an OS-sized map. They also provide more of a hugging style of fit, rather than a baggy, airy fit, which you may or may not prefer in hotter weather. There is no additional crotch panel either, so again they feel a little closer than some. So not my favourite but still pretty good."

At £35 a snap, up against pairs over £65 we feel they're an absolute winner!

A new addition worth also checking out are our Kinesis Multi Activity shorts...perfect for any day on the trail or hill.

26Mar 12 March Walk Idea's 1 - Canals

Each month on this "hub of walking" we will be suggesting perfect walks for you to go get the best from the outdoors. If you like what you see in our suggestions here you can find a full map of walks here.

This month our first suggestion is to get out and enjoy some canal side walks this Spring. The weather is due to be stunning from mid-March through to April, believe it or not, and before it gets summer hot, the canals of Britain are perfect for exploring.

Plenty of people have been recommending it of late from Julia Bradbury to the Telegraph, and we're no different!

Canal walks are perfect for this time of year, for a number of reasons:

1.) They're generally flat - so a nice introduction to the walking season and for taking buggies/pushchairs

2.) Canals are mini eco-systems - so you're surrounded by all kinds of life throughout

3.) The water - there's something nice about strolling alongside water in Spring

4.) There's loads to see for kids - frogs, ducks, birds, flowers, plants, trees, boats, locks!

5.) Cafes and Bars - most canal wharfs have cafes or bars near them for the canal boats!

So generally they're great for a nice sunny weekend walk.

We've already recommended Foxton Locks Walk as suggested by our Sales Director, Vicki. But there are so many more to be found!

Waterscape and Canal Walking are both great sites for some suggestions - check them out!

22Mar 12 Adventure Travel Review Odyssey Jacket

Reknowned gear and outdoor enthusiast Bryn Davies has been out thoroughly testing some waterproof jackets this winter and one of those was the mens Odyssey Jacket by Sprayway.

Being Bryn he put the jackets through a pretty extensive examination and we're happy with how the Odyssey came out given it was the only classic walking jacket in the test, up against some nyounger "fast and light" models.

He particularly liked the style and cut of this Gore-Tex Performance Shell jacket quoting "Out of the six men’s jackets on test the Odyssey comes out tops in looks, making it the most appealing as an everyday walking round the town, popping to the pub coat. And on the more outdoorsy side of things the jacket fits well, doesn’t ride up and has a classic walking jacket cut with a comfortable mesh inner lining."

You can find the full review in our products tips section here, along with a load of useful gear information on looking after your kit and what to wear for which activity!

It scored:

Hood: 8

Weight and pack size: 6

Value for money: 6

Overall: 7

20Feb 12 Grough Magazine Run the Rule Over Sprayway Scorpion

Bob Smith, Editor of Grough Mag has been through some sticky situations. In fact, he seems to attract them at times when he's on the hill. That being, means he can know a thing or two about testing gear and what works.

When he decided to put our new mens Mountain Jacket, the Scorpion, through it's paces we were in no doubt that it would have a tough few days ahead of it. So having wished the chosen jacket well, we sent it off to heavens knows where and waited on the results.

Bob took it out in mid-winter and despite it being the mildest winter in possibly a decade...he managed to find himself a blizzard.

The full results of the test can be found at Grough Mag here.

Some of his highlights for the jacket were, as always, the price...where else can you get a fully spec'd mountain jacket at that price point, the warmth rating of the jacket in horrendous snow, and ultimately the general design. He loved the amount and size of the pockets and the little extras we put throughout such as reflective detail.

The Scorpion is available now and is matched with our ladies Calyx jacket, both in Gore-Tex Performance Shell.

16Feb 12 Winter Walks 20 - Divis and the Black Mountain, Co Antrim

Another walk which has Owen from Marketing bursting with excitement is this on the Black Mountain, RIGHT next to Belfast City. It's also a fitting follow up to our mini feature on Belfast as a new city to visit for walking in the U.K., check out our lifewear blog for more on this.

A stand out of this walk has to be the fantastic views over Northern Ireland and beyond; from one point you can see as far as the Mourne and Sperrin Mountains and the coastlines of Scotland and the Isle of Man.

During the winter months, the views can be amazingly clear and there are glorious sunrises and sunsets that turn the sky roaring red.

For further details please check out the Sprayway Walks section of our website.

10Feb 12 Winter Walks 19 - Hatfield Forest, Essex

Hatfield Forest, Essex

On this walk you'll see many of the woodland management techniques that make Hatfield Forest so special.

You can walk through the wide open plains, explore the coppices and see the natural sculptures that are the ancient pollards.

Imagine what life was like in the forest as you visit the site of an Iron Age settlement, wander through medieval coppices and visit a Georgian Shell house.

We absolutely loved it and will thank the National Trust over and over for the recommendation!

For further details please follow this link to our Sprayway Walks section.

8Feb 12 Rhapsody Wins TGO Recommended

The Sprayway Rhapsody Tee has been awarded a TGO Recommends badge for it's performance in their 2011 Baselayers test.

Having been reviewed by eagle eye John Manning in September 2011, TGO have published the results on their smashing new website and we're delighted with the performance of our Cocona/Merino tee.

The full review can be found on their site here, or you can read the entry below.

TGO Rating 5 stars

I regard hiking as an enjoyable recreational pursuit, not an athletic challenge. I’m not, therefore, enamoured by skin-hugging, sixpack enhancing garments that make me look like a pot-bellied Spiderman wannabe. Sprayway’s Rhapsody is, thankfully therefore, casually styled with a print pattern that makes it perfectly acceptable in the pub, après hike; consisting primarily of merino augmented with Cocona, however, it has fine performance qualities.

Cocona, made of activated carbon from incinerated coconut shells, supposedly moves moisture further and faster, boosting the fabric’s wicking properties. It also absorbs aromas to delay any onset of unpleasantness. Over successive days’ wear I found the unlaundered Rhapsody very comfortable and was relieved that it didn’t develop any untoward odours.

While I’ve found the Sprayway fabric less soft than pure merino it also holds its shape slightly better. Again, raglan sleeves would be preferred and the Rhapsody’s seams are more abrasive than the Smartwool shirt’s flat-sewn seams (though it’s barely discernible).

Likes: Casual style, fabric properties

Technical Spec

Style: Crew-neck short-sleeve T-shirt

Fabric: 65% Merino/35% Cocona

Weight: 159g (L)

Sizes: Men XS-XXXL, Women (Symphony) 8-20

2Feb 12 Winter Walks 17 - Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire

This is the only featured Winter walk in Pembrokeshire combining ancient oak woodland and estuary.

Lawrenny is one of the few fragments of this type of woodland that survive here. In summer it is full of birdsong, but in winter you get splendid views of the river through the gnarled and twisted oak trees, now devoid of leaves.

For full details of this walk please enter the Sprayway Walks area of our website.

30Jan 12 Winter Walks 16 - Old Harry Rocks, Dorset

Old Harry Rocks, Dorset

This wonderful winter walk is another which will provide views all too familiar to any postcard purchaser.

It is also is one of major contrasts: still woodlands; the sea; sheer cliffs; the sea; a gentle climb; high winds; Bournemouth, Poole and Swanage all visible but sufficiently distant; then the sea again followed by a steeper decline; Poole Harbour then finally pub and a log fire.

The full details can be found here in our Sprayway Walks section, or alternatively by clicking onto the National Trust website.

25Jan 12 Winter Walks 15 - Brean Down, Somerset

Brean Down, Somerset

Whilst you may not recognise it from the name, you will all be familiar with Brean Down images as it adourns postcards sold all over the U.K.

The Down consists of a steep scarp cliff with outcrops and ledges on its south coast, and a gentle slope to the north, terminating in low cliffs giving exhilarating views of the Bristol Channel, Mendips, Somerset Levels, Quantocks and South Wales.

Please check out the Sprayway Walks section for full details.

20Jan 12 Winter Walks 14 - Morte Point, Devon

Another Devon walk from our friend's at the National Trust, this one follows the South West Coast Path to the stunning Morte Point.

We found it was exhilerating in winter with the power of the sea clear for all to sea, however it would probably be equally as breathtaking in mid-summer.

For further details please follow this link to our Sprayway Walks section.

13Jan 12 Winter Walks 13 - Ringmore, South Devon

Ringmore, South Devon

Another walk courtesy of the National Trust, this is a treat, particularly we found when you clear the valley and the amazing waters, cliff tops and weathered rocks come into view.

The full walk is available on our Sprayway Walks section and you can check out our walks map here.

5Jan 12 Winter Walks 12 - North Antrim coast, Northern Ireland

Another walk that Owen from Marketing will no doubt be championing, due to it's location in Northern Ireland!

According to many, the National Trust included there is no coastal walk like North Antrim with cove after cove of sheer cliffs ringed and shaped by layers of causeway stone.

The full walk itself can be found in the Sprayway Walks section.
